The Importance of Compassion Towards Ourselves & Others
A quote from Pema Chodron about the importance of compassion towards everyone and ourselves
Dear Fellow Meditators, 👋
Welcome to the second edition of our newsletter—I’m so delighted to have you here.
This episode’s insightful quote comes from one of my favourite Buddhist teachers, Pema Chödrön:
“It is lack of love for ourselves that inhibits our compassion toward others. If we make friends with ourselves, then there is no obstacle to opening our hearts and minds to others.”
Reflections:
What a truly beautiful and inspiring quote, filled with so much wisdom. From my own experience, this resonates deeply. As I’ve learned to cultivate compassion and appreciation for myself—including the parts I may not particularly like—I’ve noticed that this acceptance naturally extends to others.
When I encounter those same traits in someone else, I find it easier to offer understanding and kindness. It’s a powerful reminder that our external world reflects our internal one.
To truly embrace and accept others, regardless of where they are in life, we must first embrace and accept ourselves.
Pause and Reflect:
- Can you recall a recent moment when you were perhaps unkind or overly critical towards yourself?
- What would it feel like to respond to that part of yourself with compassion and acceptance instead?
- How might this shift affect your interactions with others?
Take a moment to sit with these reflections.
With gratitude,
